To set up your Outlook 2007 client to work with Google Mail:
- Open Outlook.
- For new setups, select 'Do not upgrade'.
- Select 'Yes'.'
- Enter display name, email address (including '@googlemail.com') and password.
- Click 'Manually configure...'
- Select 'Internet Email'.
- Settings: name, full email address (including '@googlemail.com')
- Select IMAP; use given incoming/outgoing servers.
- Username should be full Google Mail address, including '@googlemail.com'.
- After this screen, clicking 'Next' takes you to the end of the setup.
- Select Tools > Options > Mail Setup. Under 'Email Accounts', click 'Email Accounts'. Select account and click 'Change' above the list of accounts. Click 'More Settings', then the 'Advanced' tab. o Incoming server must be 993 and must use SSL encryption.
- Outgoing server can use 587, TLS encryption.
- Click 'OK' > 'Next' > 'Finish' > 'Close' > 'OK'.
To set up your Windows Mail client to work with Google Mail:
- Open Windows Mail - the wizard will pop up if it's your first time using it; if not, simply click Tools > Accounts > Add.
- Enter your name.
- Enter your complete Google Mail address.
- Choose 'IMAP' input given servers and tick 'Outgoing server requires authentication'.
- Enter your full Google Mail address and password.
- Click-through (the tick box is optional), then click 'Finish'.
- Select Tools > Accounts > IMAP account, then select Properties > Advanced.
Note: If you're using an older version of Thunderbird, we highly recommend upgrading to version 2.0.
To set up your Thunderbird client to work with Google Mail:
- Enable IMAP in your Google Mail account.
- Open Thunderbird and select Tools > Account Settings.
- Click Add Account.
- Select the Email account radio button and click Next. The Identity screen appears.
- Enter your full name in the Your Name field. Enter your full Google Mail email address (username@googlemail.com) in the Email Address field and click Next.
- Select IMAP as the type of incoming server you are using. Enter imap.googlemail.com in the Incoming Server field.
- Set the Outgoing Server to smtp.googlemail.com and click Next.
- Enter your Google Mail username (including @googlemail.com) in the Incoming Username and Outgoing Username fields and click Next.
- Enter a name for your email account in the Account Name field and click Next.
- Verify your account information in the dialogue box and click Finish.
- Select Server Settings from the folder list below your new account.
- Update the Port value to 993.
- In the Security Settings section, select SSL from the Use secure connection options.
- Select Check for messages at startup and Automatically download new messages
- Click Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the folder list
- Select the smtp.googlemail.com (Default) entry from the list and click Edit. The SMTP Server page appears.
- Enter smtp.googlemail.com as the Server Name and set the Port to 587.
- Select Username and password and enter your Google Mail username (including @googlemail.com) in the Username field.
- Select TLS from the Use secure connection radio buttons and click OK.
- Click OK to save your changes and exit the Account Settings dialogue.
- Did you click 'Save Changes' after enabling IMAP in Google Mail? To ensure that Google Mail can communicate with your mail client, make sure that you click Save Changes on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP settings tab.
